Teaching and Mastering 2-Digit Addition

Teaching 2 Digit Addition

Adding 2 digit numbers is an important skill that students must learn. This can be done using different strategies, including counting by ones and tens and regrouping.

The first step is to teach students about the place value of ones and tens. Then, students can arrange numbers column-wise to make them easier to add.

Counting by tens

Counting by tens is one of the first steps in learning 2 digit addition. This skill is important for understanding how to add numbers like 71 and 67. It is also essential for completing more complex addition problems that require regrouping.

It is best to introduce this skill slowly by using a number line or place value chart. Depending on your student’s level, you may want to use concrete, or hands-on, manipulatives until students are comfortable with this concept. Then, you can move on to representational, or drawn, manipulatives.

Once students have mastered counting by tens, they can start to practice adding 2-digit numbers with regrouping. This can be done by playing SplashLearn’s games. The fun games will help them understand the process and become experts at adding even complex numbers. Students will learn to add without a pencil and get rewarded for each correct answer they give. This will help them build confidence in their skills and make them feel accomplished.

Counting by ones

Counting by ones is an important skill for children to develop when adding 2-digit numbers. This is the first step in a series of skills that children need to learn before they can move on to more complicated addition strategies.

One strategy to teach this is using a number line or hundreds chart with the smaller addends highlighted. This is a great way to help students identify the place value of each addend and encourages them to count on to find the larger sum. Another way to practice this is by preparing a set of ‘one more’ and ‘one less’ cards with the addition problem written on each card.

You may also want to try introducing this addition strategy with base ten blocks as this makes it easy for kids to see the individual addends and how they combine to make a total. This will also give kids an opportunity to practice separating the tens and ones in the problems, which can be hard for some children when they are first introduced to this strategy.

Regrouping

Teaching children to add two-digit numbers using regrouping is a critical skill. However, it can be difficult for students to grasp. This is because the process of regrouping requires a good understanding of place value. It is important to teach your students the underlying concept of place value before introducing them to this method.

Teaching place value with manipulatives is an effective way to make this concept more concrete for your students. For example, you can use base ten blocks to help them visualize how the addition process works. You can also teach your students to represent numbers with grid lines. This will help them remember that each digit has its own place in the number.

Once your students have mastered adding two-digit numbers with regrouping, you can move on to subtraction. This is best done when the minuend (the number being subtracted) has a zero in the ones place. It is then easier for your students to break down the problem and solve it using the standard algorithm.

Estimating

Students need to understand that adding a number can be done in different ways. This helps them adapt to a variety of problem types and gives them freedom when working with 2-digit addition. For example, if one student learns to use the break apart method for subtraction, they can continue to use it when they are adding 2-digit numbers together.

Developing estimation skills is also important when teaching 2-digit addition with regrouping. Students can use activities such as Wait! Let’s Estimate to look at a problem and estimate how many ones will be in the answer, or how many tens will be in the answer. This helps them self-check their answers and ensures that they are using the correct strategy.

Before tackling 2 digit addition with regrouping, students should have a solid understanding of place value. This can be taught through various anchor charts and math manipulatives. Using base ten blocks is especially helpful because it makes it easy for children to see how regrouping works.

The Benefits and Requirements of Teacher Internships

The Importance of Teaching Internships

Teacher internships are a critical step in becoming a certified teacher or changing careers. Interns work under the guidance of a lead teacher to help prepare materials, assist with teaching and provide ongoing feedback.

Be sure to ask lots of questions. Don’t be afraid to be a “bother.” Most experienced teachers enjoy sharing their expertise.

What are the benefits of an internship?

Teachers are a highly coveted commodity and, as such, many school districts have a strong desire to hire interns. However, there are times when district requests to host teacher interns cannot be honored. This can be due to a number of reasons and has nothing to do with the intentions of either the intern or the school.

Internships give students the chance to put their coursework into a real-world context, and to network with people in their field. They also allow them to gain skills that may not be taught in class – and which can be useful in other career paths, too.

Hofstra University offers an internship pathway for candidates who have completed successful long-term lead teaching experience and are offered a position by their district to continue their classroom work in the spring term. Candidates selected for this opportunity will be paid a stipend by their district to complete the spring term internship. They will still receive ongoing support from their university coach and cooperating teacher.

What are the requirements for an internship?

Teachers seeking certification must complete a teaching internship before being recommended for licensure. This semester-long student teaching experience consists of classroom observation, classroom teaching, and the preparation of materials and lessons.

A teaching intern will typically be paired with an experienced cooperating teacher in a school that is relevant to their field of study. Interns will learn from the expertise and guidance of their mentor, while gaining a hands-on, practical perspective on how to teach.

During their time at their assigned schools, teachers will be required to attend weekly seminars pre-scheduled by their program coordinator. They will also be expected to complete a student teaching portfolio, and meet regularly with their supervisors to discuss their experiences and receive feedback.

Once a teacher intern has demonstrated enough poise and confidence to lead classes independently, their master teacher will permit them to take the lead for a lesson they have prepared. Over time, the teacher intern will gradually increase the number of classes they teach on their own.

What are the benefits of a practicum?

A practicum offers the chance to put classroom theory into practice. It allows you to understand the connection between theory and practical experience, which will help you in future job interviews. A practicum is also a great way to get a foot in the door and start working immediately.

During a practicum, you will work with a variety of people who have years of experience in the field. This will give you a unique perspective that you won’t get in the classroom, which can help you advance your career faster.

You will also gain valuable teaching skills that you can take with you after graduation. It is important to make the most of your practicum so that you can walk away feeling confident about your abilities. You will also have the opportunity to network with a wide range of people, which can help you find future employment opportunities or even become a mentor in the field.

What are the requirements for a non-teaching internship?

An internship is more intensive than a practicum. It usually takes place later in a student’s program, and the responsibilities it requires are more substantial. A teacher intern, for example, would design curricula and present lessons to students, while a medical intern would evaluate multiple patients.

A teaching internship requires that the teacher candidate be enrolled in the appropriate student teaching/graduate practicum course, have a minimum of a 3.7 cumulative grade point average, and obtain two letters of recommendation from faculty who can talk about her knowledge, skills and dispositions towards teaching. She must also attend all reflective seminars, have a student teaching/graduate practicum orientation and meet with her advisor at least once during the duration of her internship.

After the completion of her internship, a teacher intern will return to campus for a seminar. This is an opportunity to discuss her experiences and for her to complete licensure applications. She will also be able to speak with the Director of Clinical Experience, Licensure and Accountability or her university supervisors about any concerns she might have.

Becoming a K-12 Teacher in New York: Requirements and Pathways

Obtaining a K-12 Teaching Certificate in New York

Educators must pass required New York state teaching exams. This includes a content specialty test for the subject or grades they plan to teach.

College graduates typically complete a state-approved graduate program that leads to initial certification. Alternative programs are designed for career change candidates and include an introductory component and student teaching experience.

What is a k-12 teaching certificate?

A k-12 teaching certificate is the credential that authorizes you to teach in a specific subject area and grade level. Different subjects and grades require different types of certification, so it’s important to check the NYSED website for details.

For example, a k-12 teaching certificate for elementary education requires completing an approved teacher preparation program and passing the Educating All Students (EAS) exam, while a k-12 teaching certificate for physical education requires passing the NYSTCE Physical Education CST and edTPA exams. The NYSED website has search tools to help you determine the requirements for a particular subject area and grade level.

Out-of-state teachers may qualify for an Initial or Professional certificate depending on their educational pathway and other factors. A limited number of regional certification offices, operated by the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, can provide individual evaluations of out-of-state teacher credentials and advise on certification requirements. All certificate holders must register with the NYSED through the online TEACH system in five-year cycles.

What are the requirements for a k-12 teaching certificate?

Generally, prospective teachers need a bachelor’s degree. The specific requirements vary by state, though. Many teaching programs incorporate a practicum component, which allows students to observe seasoned educators in the classroom and learn from them. Some states also require aspiring teachers to take subject tests that measure their knowledge of the curriculum, and some even have their own state-specific exams.

Once a teacher completes the required coursework and pass all tests, they are awarded an initial certificate by New York State Education Department (NYSED). This is a starter credential that lasts for five years. During that time, teachers can apply to advance to a professional certificate by submitting their educational recommendation, proof of mentorship, employment experience, exam scores and fingerprint clearance via the TEACH account.

How do I get a k-12 teaching certificate?

There are many paths to becoming a teacher in New York State, and requirements vary by grade level, subject area, educational setting and more. Generally, prospective teachers complete a bachelor’s degree in education or the subject they intend to teach, undergo student teaching and pass state-mandated exams.

Whether you choose a traditional pathway or opt to pursue certification based on out-of-state credentials, the first step is to apply for an Initial Certificate. You will need to submit official transcripts, proof of student teaching (if it does not appear on your transcript) and copies of any relevant test scores.

You must also complete a background check, and most schools require fingerprinting. Depending on your chosen pathway, you may be required to take additional training courses such as child abuse identification/reporting or sexual harassment prevention and intervention. Upon completion of these courses, you will be able to begin your career in the classroom. New York state teaching certificates are valid for five years.

How do I become a k-12 teacher?

To become a teacher, you must first earn your bachelor’s degree. Most prospective teachers choose a degree in education or the subject they plan to teach. Many of these programs also offer a practicum, which allows you to observe experienced teachers and interact with students in real classroom settings.

Once you have your bachelor’s degree, you can apply to New York’s teaching certification program. The NYSED offers multiple pathways to certification, depending on your previous experience and how quickly you want to move into teaching. Once you receive your initial certificate, you must complete two years of classroom teaching.

If you graduate from an out-of-state teacher preparation program, your credentials will be evaluated on an individual basis. You can find information on these evaluations at the NYSED website. You must pass the edTPA exam and take content specialty tests for each certification area. Upon approval, your teaching credential will be posted to your TEACH account.

Enhancing Learning Through Game-Based Activities

Using Games to Enhance Math, Science and Vocabulary Lessons

Students come to class with baggage of their own. Playing games can help ease the tension, build camaraderie through light competition, increase energy levels and buy more time for more focused lesson work later in the hour.

Game based learning can also improve multi-tasking skills–many games require players to keep track of multiple elements at once like their health, weapons, ammunition and more.

Games that Test Knowledge

It’s challenging to hold the attention of a group of students for long periods, even when they’re well behaved and studious. A fun review game can change the focus, encourage teamwork and add a competitive element that can be motivating.

Games like Jeopardy, crossword Bingo, Pub Quiz and Charades offer multiple categories of questions that can cover most major subjects. They’re easy to set up in class and can be adapted for remote teaching on platforms such as Kahoot!

Pictionary and charades require that students engage in what psychologists call “elaborative rehearsal,” which is the cognitive process of connecting novel stimuli to existing knowledge. This depth of processing is important to help move a new concept from short-term memory to long-term retention. Adding the gamification aspect increases the energy and buy-in of these review games and makes them more effective formative assessments before an exam. Use an UnWheel of Fortune style game to tally points, assign teams and encourage collaboration and critical thinking among your students.

Games that Test Skills

Games that test skills may not have been designed specifically as testing games. However, most can be modified or adapted to act as either a simplified model of a system or allow testers to practice different testing skills or concepts.

For example, Azul is a board game that tests strategic thinking and concentration. Sudoku tests cognitive skills and memory. Trading games like Chinatown and Sidereal Confluence test negotiating and salesmanship skills. Programming games such as Javascrpt and Warrior JS can improve coding skills or even land you a job!

One of the fastest growing assessment tools in the industry is pymetrics, which uses 12 online games to assess over 90 cognitive and behavioural traits. It is possible to prepare for pymetrics by taking an online training course and practising the games beforehand. This will ensure that you are ready to take the assessment and get the best results. Also, you will not be confused by the instructions for the games as you will have already mastered them.

Games that Test Numeracy

Playing games that test numeracy provides students with a variety of ways to practice important math concepts. The games also help with a variety of other skills, including spatial reasoning, estimation and mastering basic math operations.

Depending on your students’ abilities, you can modify the difficulty level of these games to suit their needs. For example, students who struggle with addition might try to find two numbers that add up to 10. Kids who are more practiced at adding can look for three numbers that multiply together to equal a target number.

If you have a class set of iPads, students can work together to solve these questions. The team that answers all of the questions correctly wins. Another option is to divide your class into two teams and provide each with a sheet of addition or multiplication facts. Each student fills in one of the numbers on their sheet, signing their initials beside it to show they did so.

Games that Test Vocabulary

Games are great for assessing vocabulary knowledge and allowing students to practice using new words in a fun setting. They can also give teachers a chance to identify difficult words and provide additional instruction on word parts, roots, synonyms and antonyms during a whole-class vocabulary review.

One of the most popular vocabulary games involves pairing students and asking them to describe a word to each other. Students may need to provide a definition, an example of the word, or the spelling. The first player to guess correctly gets a point and the game continues with new players.

Another great game for assessing vocabulary is Pictionary. Divide students into pairs and have them stand in the center of the circle. Stick or pin a vocabulary picture on each student’s back. The teacher then reads a clue (e.g., spelling, pronunciation or definition) and the first pair of students to slap the board or desk gets their answer.

Teaching Standards: Ensuring Effective Education in Iowa

8 Teaching Standards Iowa

8 teaching standards iowa are guidelines that administrators use in their evaluations of teachers. They are not a checklist to be ticked off, rather they guide future growth.

Local districts are free to design their own staff evaluation systems, but they must align with the established criteria for Iowa teaching standards.

1. Learner-Centered Learning

This standard requires teachers to understand how learners develop and engage in learning. They then use this understanding to create learning environments that are cognitively demanding and aligned to high standards.

These environments include student-centered learning, where students make decisions about what they learn and how they learn it. This can help students process information more deeply and find connections between abstract academic concepts and the real world.

For example, they may design projects that solve real-world problems like restoring an ecosystem or increasing voter turnout.

2. Engaged Learning

It’s about equipping students with the career competencies of critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication and intercultural fluency. These are the skills that employers want.

Whether through undergraduate research, internships, professional practice or civic engagement, engaged learning is the cornerstone of a Baylor education. These high-impact learning experiences connect academics to real-world issues and provide students with unique educational opportunities.

These community-based projects support the Iowa Teaching Standards and Criteria. Each local district will determine its own policies and processes in effort to meet the established criteria.

3. Collaboration

Collaboration is a critical skill for today’s workplace. It allows teams to work together on projects and achieve their goals faster.

This guide helps you understand the principles of effective collaboration in the modern workplace. It also outlines how to develop your collaborative skills, including how to give (and receive) feedback.

This guide serves as a resource for educators to meet their yearly professional development plan requirements. It contains learning opportunities, resources and supports to help teachers meet the new Iowa teacher standards.

4. Accountability

In this age of standards-based education, there has been a growing emphasis on defining what teachers should know and be able to do. However, calls for accountability extend beyond simply describing teaching competency to include the evaluation of said competency.

Many of the same issues that have plagued traditional assessment systems are impacting current teacher-created tests. These concerns include how to accurately measure student learning and growth. Fortunately, there are solutions. One example is GOLD, an observational assessment system that helps educators be intentional about their practice.

5. Assessment

Assessments measure student learning and help educators make informed decisions about instruction. They can take many forms, including formative assessments and summative assessments.

High stakes are tests that have a major impact on students, schools or districts. This can include standardized tests or teacher-created assessments that are linked to rewards or punishments (e.g., school funding, grade promotion or graduation).

Iowa has a strong commitment to standards-based learning. The state participated in the development of NGSS and is a governing member of SMARTER Balanced. Iowa’s AEAs offer training on NGSS for district administrators.

6. Personalized Learning

Personalized learning refers to teaching students based on their individual development, background, interests and experiences. It includes a variety of educational techniques that can vary the pace and method of learning, while still meeting academic standards.

Educators who use this approach believe it offers learners key opportunities for autonomy and choice, while also keeping them engaged. They are able to work on tasks and assignments at their own speed, while teachers can help them with challenging parts of the curriculum.

7. Effective Communication

Effective communication is crucial for success in the workplace and in life. Misunderstandings can be costly, both professionally and personally. This is why it is important to clearly communicate your thoughts and ideas, whether it is in a written email or an oral presentation.

Students develop skills and strategies in preparing written and spoken messages that convey complex ideas and messages to diverse audiences. This includes communicating with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.

8. Accountability

The Iowa School Performance Profiles include multiple measures about the performance of students, districts and schools. Some of these measures are used in accountability calculations, while others provide valuable information that is not included in the calculation of a school’s overall score.

This measure reports the percentage of students in grades five, eight and ten who scored proficient or above on the statewide assessments (ISASP and Dynamic Learning Maps) for science. This measure is included in the accountability system under Every Student Succeeds Act.
